Open-E DSS v7, which has been a significant part of Boston's product offerings under the Boston Igloo T-Stor Series, has proven to be a successful entry-level Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution for small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) and the Small Office/Home Office (SoHo) market. It has served us well, but as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.
What you need to know
Open-E has announced the timeline for the end of sale and support for DSS v7. Open-E will continue to offer its Jovian DSS platform based on ZFS, and Boston will continue to support and supply this product line - however, for DSS v7, there's a critical timeline to keep in mind.
DSS v7 will only be available for one more year and, after November 2024, there will be no support renewals or new sales. Software updates and new features will also cease at the end of 2023.
Planning for the transition
It's crucial for customers to consider a transition plan to another platform sooner rather than later. Selecting an alternative product for transition is not something to be taken lightly, but the discontinuation will creep up upon us before we know it – it is better to be prepared as early as possible.
For customers with active DSS v7 deployments which are in production, Boston are qualified to assist in making a transition to the full Jovian DSS platform.
