Boston 'Goes Green' for St Patrick's Day

Posted on 16 March, 2016

Top of the morning to you! At Boston we're going green this March 17th in honour of St. Patricks day. We're discussing the easiest ways to go green both here at Boston HQ and at home, and we're encouraging everyone to make some simple changes to their everyday routine that can, in the long term make a massive difference.

Our low cost tips for going green at work include:

  • Double up. Configure your office printer or copy machine so it prints on both sides of the page.
  • Put it to sleep. If you'll be away from your computer for more than 20 minutes, change it to "sleep" mode.
  • Cycle to work or carpool.
  • Take the stairs.
  • Recycle electronics.

At home:

  • Truly turn off electronics. Plug your devices — the TV and DVD player, or the computer and printer — into a certified power strip; switch the whole group off for the evening to prevent phantom electrical draw.
  • BYOB. Bags, that is. It's good for your wallet, too.
  • Recycle your morning newspaper.
  • Switch to energy saving light bulbs.
  • Support local suppliers.

There are some other options, if you wanted to take 'going green' to the extreme:

  • Reduce your carbon footprint by giving up that fire-walking hobby of yours!
  • Don't turn up the AC, unless of course the "AC" is followed by a "/DC".
  • The greenest time to do your laundry is after 9am, so make sure you leave the house by 8.30.

At Boston we're proud of our green incentives, including a cycle to work scheme in conjunction with cyclescheme.co.uk as well as our WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) recycling process and we will continue to improve upon our environmental fingerprint.

Being in the tech industry, sometimes technology and 'going green' can be perceived as mutually exclusive concepts. As a result, low power and power efficient computing are becoming ever more important concepts for the IT industry as power costs increase and environmental impact becomes more significant. Boston and Supermicro have worked together for many years to create the industry's most power efficient solutions whilst still maintaining performance leadership.

One such low cost, low power, highly efficient solution is the Boston Fenway 2104-0C. The Boston Fenway 2104-0C, powered by Intel's latest generation Xeon™ 1200 v5 series (codename Skylake), brings never seen before performance to the SME and dedicated hosting segment. Now featuring DDR-4 memory up to 2133MHz and 64GB capacity, even memory hungry workloads are well within its grasp. Recently reviewed by Pc Pro magazine, the Fenway 2104-0C packs plenty of features into its space-saving chassis. The Xeon E3 v5 CPU provides oodles of processing power; it has room to grow in the storage department; and that superfast NVMe SSD means never having to worry about OS performance again. Low cost, low power & high efficiency - a truly green solution.

To celebrate our green solutions & new green ways, we're also giving away a "pot 'o gold" (sorry, no leprechauns included) in the form of an Irish Hamper, complete with delicious treats from the emerald isle. Simply follow us on Twitter and retweet our #BostonGoesGreen campaign to be in with a chance of winning!

So cross your fingers, fish out your four leaf clover & may the luck of the Irish lead you to the pot 'o gold at the end of the rainbow!
